How to Improve Your Skills When It Comes to Writing Essays

Many students are scared of writing essays. I don't really blame them because I was scared of it myself when I was in college. At first, I thought, "writing is easy, you just have to put your opinion on a piece of paper and that's it"...not. When I first took an essay writing class in college, I had no clue about writing essays at all because I attended school in my native country which mostly emphasizes spelling and grammar but not necessarily writing full paragraphs or essays. In short, even though I was doing okay in my first ever English writing class, I realized how much I do not know and how much I still need to learn.

I see many people who struggle with writing assignments when the teacher asks them to write essays with 500 to 1200 words which translates to about 2-6 pages (double spaced). I know the number of pages that corresponds with the number of words because I have had problems finding that many words to the point that I need to count each and every page after I am done with the paper. From my experience though, I was able to overcome my fear of writing (otherwise, I wouldn't be able to find the words to fill this web site). Ironically, I overcame it while I was towards the end of my college life.

Looking back now, I have a few tips for those college students who have writophobia (you guessed it...that's fear of writing...I made it up). These tips come from years of writing and re-writing my essays based on my teacher's critics and advice.

I have experience in writing two types of papers: academic and scientific. Academic papers are those essays wherein you think critically about a topic and support your opinion through evidence from other writers. This is the main type of paper which you will be exposed to for most of your college life. If you are looking for tips in writing this type of essay, click here.

If you are a science major like I was, you will be writing some research or scientific papers towards your third or fourth year in college when you get to your more advanced classes. Writing scientific papers is totally different from academic papers and you will see why in this section. I actually think that this type of essay is easier to write but maybe that's just because I'm a nerd :)
