The benefit of college education can be great. Explore the possibilites here.

Value of a College Degree

You have probably heard that college graduates make an average of $1 million more in their working life compared to high school graduates. That's a shocker isn't it? Many research studies prove this to be true and I will either cite/review those studies later on.

From experience, I realized the value of my college degree as soon as I graduated. 'Soon' is three months to be exact. At first, I was afraid that my investment in my own education has gotten me nowhere. Imagine that after all your years of being a student, you are thrown out into the real world armed with your bachelor's degree (that is, if you are not planning on going to graduate school). It was a pretty scary situation for me and ONE of my biggest questions was "what am I supposed to do with this degree now?"

Eric Digest, a government sponsored educational publication, has done some studies on not just the difference in earnings between college and high school graduates but also the social and economical benefits associated with having a college degree. I reviewed this article and here is the result.

The College Board, a non-profit organization whose aim is to help students achieve college success, has also done similar studies. In, this section I want to cite some of their findings and compare them to my own experiences.

Tax education credits

Aside from the benefits mentioned in the previous section, college students have other 'perks'...tax credits. Note that these only exist when you work part-time while going to school or your working parents can claim education credits on their tax return. In other words, you must have income. Yes, Uncle Sam gives you an incentive for going to college because he expects you to pay more taxes when you graduate (but that's another story altogether).

There are two types of tax credits available to college students. These are called the Hope credit and Lifetime Learning credit. Depending on your situation, you may only qualify for one or the other, not both. Click on this tax education credit link to find out how much more money you can get out of your tax refund.
