Online College Courses vs. Traditional Universities
Part of the reason why online college courses are popular is due to their convenience. Most online schools offer courses that are completely online (online courses) whereas there are some wherein you have to go to courses at least once a week (contact courses). In addition, these courses are structured in a way that students will be able to get their degrees or certificates in a shorter amount of time compared to traditional four-year schools. However, because students finish faster, this might also mean that there will be fewer breaks between semesters/courses and the classes may be taught at a much faster pace.
Note: I will call the classes by the names in the parentheses for simplicity and discussion purposes.
Contact Courses exist because some concepts that are presented in class may require some practical demonstration OR some people might prefer some type of contact with their teachers and/or their classmates. On the other hand, online courses can be purely theoretical that its concepts can be taught through words, graphics or video demonstrations. The need for both types of courses also arises from the fact that students' needs are different. The following table outlines the characteristics of each course type and the types of people they may be suitable for. | Criteria | Contact Courses | Online Courses | | Convenience | Suitable for people who are not too busy to attend class at least once a week | Suitable for working professionals who already have some experience in the field they are studying and who are too busy to go to class | | Learning | The additional interaction with teachers and other students may be provide support in the learning process | Not all people might survive in this course since there may be very limited help available to them | | Studying | Suitable for people who like to study with other people | Suitable for people who learn better by themselves | | Types of Academic Majors | For majors that need or require actual/practical demonstration such as some majors in medical health | For majors that are theoretical and don't need demonstration such as business, computer technology etc. | As you can see from the table, contact courses are structured similarly as most traditional courses. If you consider yourself a 'traditional' student who learns best by interacting with other people but you want to finish school faster, then contact courses at online schools just might be the right choice for you. In contrast, working professionals who already have the experience but need a degree/certificate for their current career choice might just be perfect for online courses since they already have most of the skills and knowledge they need in order to succeed in class. Whichever type of student you are, performing research abouth the school's reputation, academic programs, location etc. may be helpful in making your decision. Another important step you can take is to contact the school for more information or ask your friends who have gone to these types of schools. These steps will arm you with information so that you won't be fooled by marketing tactics. These actions will also help you judge good vs. bad advice. Keep in mind that like traditional schools, some online schools are more reputable than others. This reputation will make all the difference once you are looking for a job in your field of study. There is also a cost consideration if you are thinking of enrolling in online college courses. Most schools who offer these types of courses are privately owned which translates to higher costs for students. Most students may qualify for federal financial aid but they would usually get less money when compared to students in the same situation who are going to four-year state/public universities. In effect, students are trading off more money for less time.
Online education is a great alternative for students who are looking for something different. However, do your research so that you won't regret your decision later on. The time and effort that you put in researching information will aid you in making the right decision for your future.
