Career search:
Take control of your future

Once you have gotten your results from the assessment center during your career search, their counselors will usually give you a list of suggested jobs that fits your profile.

They can also direct you to more resources such as career guides, career education programs etc. These additional resources will give you more in depth knowledge about the careers you may be considering. Career guides usually contain an extensive description of career fields which may include the following: job description, starting salary, future job outlook, possible areas for promotion/growth, and more.

If you want a more interactive experience, then career education programs would be right for you. These programs will do what the title says, educate you regarding possible careers. These programs may be a series of classes or seminars offered at your school that are aimed at giving you a bigger picture of possible careers before you commit yourself to one. This is crucial for your career search because they may also provide you with strategies to help direct you in the right direction.

I know that the process I have mentioned above works because I have done it myself. When I enrolled in community college, I was unsure of which career field I wanted to commit myself to. My test results determined that I will work best with people and my career counselor gave me some very useful possible career suggestions. After looking through a long list of jobs that I can do, I narrowed the list down to the jobs I can see myself doing. My first choice was to be a veterinarian and that choice has not changed until today.

When I was done at the community college, I transferred to a four-year university as an animal science major. I have not regretted my decision...not even once. Today, I have a rewarding career in research while also getting more experience before I apply to veterinary school.

You're own road to career enlightenment may be a little different but remember that every person will have doubts about their future. Avoid doubting your decisions in the future by performing some research now. In the end, your work will pay off by giving you a rewarding career that you will enjoy with passion and enthusiasm.
